Laptop batteries are a bit like the soles of a favourite pair of shoes — they wear gradually with use, and one day you notice they're just not doing the job they once did. There's no need to panic; there's usually a sensible path forward.
A few things worth trying
- Check your battery health in system settings. Most laptops will show you a “battery health” or “maximum capacity” figure that's worth knowing.
- Reduce background drains. Lowering screen brightness and closing unused programs can buy real extra time day to day.
- Update your software. Occasionally a system update includes genuine improvements to battery management.
- Avoid extreme heat. Leaving a laptop in a hot car or on a doona for hours genuinely shortens battery life over time.
Signs it's worth a proper check
- A full charge lasting noticeably less time than it used to
- The laptop switching off suddenly, often well above 0%
- The base of the laptop running warm even during light use
- The case appearing to lift, bulge or sit unevenly — a sign of swelling
If it's reached that point
Bring it in and we'll check the battery's actual condition rather than guess from symptoms — and talk you through, honestly, whether a replacement is the sensible next step.
