“Plugged in, not charging” can mean a few different things — sometimes it's the cable, sometimes the charging port, sometimes the battery itself, and occasionally just a setting that's quietly gotten in the way. A bit of process of elimination goes a long way.
Worth checking first
- Try a different cable and power adapter. Worn charging cables are one of the most common causes of this exact problem.
- Check the connection point for damage or debris. A loose or dirty port can prevent a good connection even when everything looks plugged in.
- Look for a battery message in your system settings. Many laptops will tell you plainly whether they detect the battery, and whether it's charging, plugged in, or simply not communicating.
- Try a different power outlet. Occasionally the issue isn't the laptop at all.
Signs it's a hardware issue
- The laptop only powers on while plugged in, and the battery percentage never rises
- The charging light (where fitted) doesn't come on, or flickers oddly
- The cable or adapter feels unusually warm during use
- The issue persists across multiple cables, adapters and outlets
If it's still not charging
Bring it in and we'll work out exactly where the fault sits — port, cable, charging circuit, or battery — and explain what's needed plainly, free of charge, before any work begins.
