Whether it was a knock, a drop, or something pressing on the lid in a bag, a freshly cracked laptop screen is never a fun surprise. Before anything else, here's what's worth doing — and avoiding — in the first little while.
Worth doing straight away
- Close the lid gently and stop using it. Continuing to use a cracked display can spread the damage and put extra strain on the connections behind it.
- Back up what you can, if the laptop still boots. A working machine with a damaged screen can often still be connected to another monitor in the meantime.
- Take a photo of the damage. It helps us — and you — get a clearer initial picture of what's likely involved.
- Avoid pressing on the crack. It's tempting to check if it's “just the glass”, but pressing can spread the damage further.
What not to do
- Don't apply tape, glue or pressure directly to the display
- Don't keep using it propped at odd angles to “see around” the crack
- Don't leave it somewhere it could get knocked again before it's looked at
